Plague of the Dead: The Morningstar Saga by Z A Recht

A new strain of virus arose naturally in the remote regions of Africa which turned out to be far worse than Ebolavirus, SARS coronavirus, and the influenza A virus combined. People infected with the virus, eventually named the Morningstar Strain, suffered from high fever and delirium leading to hallucinations, delusions, incoherent speech, and violent behavior. Mortality rate was 100%, and there was no known cure or vaccine. Death, however, was just the beginning. The victims reanimated with an insatiable hunger for human flesh.

Lt. Col. Anna Demillio, a researcher at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) was one of the first to recognize the potential of the virus, and was in fact conducting a study on the development of a vaccine against the Morningstar Strain. In an exchange of emails with Maj. General Francis Sherman of the U.S. Army at the Pentagon, she tried to warn the authorities of the consequences of the spread of the virus. She recommended that restrictions be imposed for travelers coming from Africa. Although Gen. Sherman forwarded the Lieutenant Colonel’s suggestions to the civilian authorities, it was ignored for economic and political reasons. This denial precluded any request for funding her research on a vaccine.

Lt. Col. Demillio then teamed up with a brave and intrepid reported, Julie Ortiz, in an attempt to make the situation public, but they were branded as traitors by the U.S. government, incarcerating them in an NSA facility.

Meanwhile, Gen. Sherman found himself in Africa trying to fight off a horde of zombies who never seem to run out. Running out of ammo and supplies, Sherman had to order his men to evacuate and make a run back to the United States in a naval destroyer. They arrived in a United States that was decimated by the Morningstar virus. The general decides that he must locate Lt. Col. Demillio and immediately get her to work on a vaccine.
