Monster Island: A Zombie Novel by David Wellington

The world has turned upside down. The epidemic that transformed living human beings into undead zombies had a more devastating impact on countries that depended heavily on advanced technologies. When the power plants, communications systems, and transport facilities stopped working, so did the entire country. The United States, Europe, Japan, and the other advanced civilizations had simply ceased to exist. On the other hand, countries that were mired in civil wars and warlordism fared better as they were not dependent on the technological amenities enjoyed by the wealthy nations. Besides, in countries like Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Somalia, almost everybody had guns, which was precisely what was needed to shoot the undead.

It was in Somalia that Dekalb, a former UN weapons inspector, and her daughter sought refuge after they fled Nairobi. Father and daughter were picked up by a bunch of mercenaries and thrown into a jail along with other Westerners. The rest of the prisoners were eventually set free, but Dekalb was given a mission by the leader of the group, Mama Halima. It turned out that Mama Halima had contracted AIDS and was in need of medicines that could only come from the former USA. Since Dekalb was an American who was familiar with New York, she sent him along with an army consisting battle-hardened young girls as they had plenty of experience fighting other warlord’s armies.

Back in New York, a medical student named Gary realized that there was no way he could avoid getting attacked by the zombies whose numbers are increasing everyday. He knew that the reason zombies are incapable of thinking is that their brains were deprived of oxygen at the time they died. Using his medical background, he attached himself to a respirator that continually supplied him with oxygen and committed suicide. When he reanimated, he was still capable of thought and speech.

The rest of the book details Dekalb’s adventures and battles with the undead as he and his army searched for Mama Halima’s medicines. Along the way they meet Gary who initially tried to help them, but soon could no longer contain his new desires and impulses as a zombie.
