The movie begins with an explanation of the origin of the zombie plague –the Sumatran rat-monkey. The animal is a hybrid that was born when plague rats raped three monkeys on Skull Island. The explorer Stewart manages to capture one of the rat-monkeys. On the way back to civilization with his guide and the animal, they are stopped by fierce warrior tribesmen. They demand that he leave the monkey but Stewart refuses and instead makes a run for his jeep. He, his guide, and the rest of his men escape but in the confusion he is bitten by the animal. On seeing this, the men hold him down and kill him. The Sumatran rat-monkey, however, continues its journey to the Wellington Zoo in New Zealand.
At the zoo, the lovers Lionel and Paquita are strolling along not knowing that his mom, who disapproves of their relationship, is snooping on them. While hiding from the two, she is bitten by the Sumatran rat-monkey.
Slowly, mom turns into a zombie yet Lionel cares for her too much to turn her over to the authorities. He administers doses of veterinary anesthetics to calm her down but she manages to escape and starts murdering and eating a few victims. This turns them to zombies but Lionel manages to lock them up in their basement. In one of mom’s nocturnal forages, she is hit by a tram and had to be buried in the cemetery, as the townsfolk believe she is dead. She, however, bursts from her grave leading to more murders and zombies.
In the meantime, Lionel’s Uncle Les arrives at his house and starts to bother him over his inheritance from his mom. In the process he discovers the zombies hidden in the basement and threatens blackmail unless Lionel turn over his inheritance. He agreed but before leaving the house he administers chemicals he believe will poison and kill the zombies.
When Les arrive with several friends to take ownership of the house and for a housewarming, the zombies in the basement suddenly attack the guests. All but Lionel and Pacquita die in the attack. They manage to kill all of the zombies, including Lionel’s mom who pursues them to the rooftop but falls into the house which is now on fire.
